Thinking of Breeding

That's Iris the Virus in the picture with a student. This is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. It appears that Cat will be off for awhile. Playing with the idea of breeding her. If any of you have followed any of my posts regarding breeding on FHOTD you'll know I'm not a gung ho kind of breeder. It's pretty stressy for me. I've bred two mares in just under 20 years. The first was my old qtr gelding Strider. He was probably one of the best horses I've ridden, let alone owned. The second was Iris...aka Iris the Virus. Iris is just started, and is a pretty good girl...but she does have opinions. She's very athletic, very pretty and her ambition is to grow up to be head mare like her momma.

Iris is Cat's daughter. Kind makes me pause on breeding Cat again. lol Iris is probably not going to be a 'for everybody' kind of horse. If I choose to sell, Iris it will be more difficult to place her in a suitable home than a less ambitious soul. Iris is in no way mean. She's just a lot. I don't think it would be too hard to have a mess on your hands, if you went about things the wrong way. There is however no guarantee that the next foal will have the alpha qualities Iris does. It could be a nice easy going middle of the road kind of horse.
Iris is the filly JR was supposed to pick up to start on his way to Fug's. He didn't stop by. Smart man. lol So, the old fat woman had to start her. Oh well, it went fine. It's just the getting time to ride her and continue her training. So adding another foal into the mix at this time is probably not a brilliant move.
Just not sure what to do. I'll probably procrastinate long enough that it will be too late in the season anyway. It's pretty late as it is.
I was thinking of calling Cheryl Humphrey of North Quarter Ranch. I've always liked her, and her horses. Loved Topolena. What a great horse. She has two very nice cow bred stallions standing now. Might be worth a call.

Pretty girl.

IMHO, if you are at all hesitant I'd say wait.

ONTH- couldn't hurt to call, right?

Well, now that is clear as mud.

Ha!

If you are not sure ,I would wait , also what about the meds and the injury ,would the increased weightbearing of pregnancy affect it?

I could call Cheryl. She may have the books closed for this year anyway. That would settle it wouldn't it. lol

Check out her site.

She's had 3 Legend shots. I don't plan on anything additional other than Adequan. She looks better, but not 100%.

I'll ask my vet about the weight. Better safe than sorry.

I am a big fan of Cat. And my sense of you doesn't cause me to worry about additional unwanted horses.

I would say as you keep toying with the idea you are probably getting closer than farther from the reality.

And I think everyone would agree that the point was never to completely stop breeding quality horses. And Cat is quality.
And Topolena?
Keep it up HP and I will be glowing in the dark.

The extra weight won't factor too heavily for awhile. And the vet already said maybe you should. AFTER he examined her. I took that to mean that maybe she just wasn't up to the stress of chasing cans at Mach speed anymore.

HP Where is the Topolena? Am I blind?
What am I missing.
The yellow horse is from MN. I keep telling you.

horspoor said...

Well, she looks better. She only shows lame on a tight circle at the trot now. So, not a rideable horse at my house.

Topolena passed away some years back. But Cheryl has two others. Kangarooster, and Smart Peppy Cutter. Both very nice horses. I know SPC...but I've never seen Kangarooster in real life.

Dena said...

But the other horse is Gallo Del Cielo bred and we all know how I feel about Hiiiiimmmm...

horspoor said...

Years ago I was at a show. Mark was showing Topolena...it was Topolena the young appy stud jumped on. The old boy kept his cool. Man he was a nice horse.

horspoor said...

They're nice aren't they. I like both of them. SPC is the more proven of the two...but he's older. I'd need to really look at them both, and see who would cross the best on Cat.

Dena said...

I assumed it was a Topolena bred sire.
That explains it.

Can you line up a buyer before you breed? Someone who will purchase whatever hits the ground? I don't know how that works, or if that even works, because you know how involved I am with breeding horses. lol.

horspoor said...

I don't know. We know if I breed it probably isnt' going anywhere. Why, would you like to purchase a Cat foal? I'd sell one to you. I have a very long list of who I wont sell to. lol

blueheron said...

Me? I ain't taking no Cat baby! lol. I've got one of Spyder's, and she's hot enough for me, thank you very much. lol. My friend and her hot horses...

I was just thinking, with Cat's reputation, there ought to be some folks lined up. Hey, what about Dr. Bruce? Does HE want a Cat baby?

Dena said...

There is a nice grandson of Gallo Del Cielo where I sent Gato for training.
I can't say enough good things about the look and disposition of this stallion.
I am going to look at his first baby.
I don't know why.lol

horspoor said...

No, Bruce likes mules. lol

I'd probably sell one to Heather if her situation was a little different. Uhm...if Rhonda was a little more secure of seat...yeah. Barb...yeah.

If you really think about it, who do we know personally that is suitable?

blueheron said...

Um, not many I can think of. Heather would be good, though. I still think she'd be good to help you get Iris going well, like you were talking, I think.

So you'd be making another horse for yourself, because we know finding homes for horses is one of your favorite things to do. Not. lol.

Dena said...

HP OT I have noted a pattern. You and JR are formidable modifiers.
My rational self thanks you.

horspoor said...

LOL...it's funny. He worked for some of the same people I did a few years after I left. He's a few years younger than me. Small world, huh?

horspoor said...

Oh, and no big Dena...anytime. You're welcome.

Dena said...

HP :)

So when is the new horse coming? I got chumped on mine.
He is now going to some bush track to be pounded in 4.5 furlongs.
For the low bargain price of $1,000.
I am working on getting over it.

horspoor said...

I don't know. I'm not sure I'm even going to have time today to go look. Moved some hay. Need to unload some massive ceramic pots from the back of my car. Realized...oh I can't pick these up. lol So, need to get some help.

Want to go check out a dressage clinic at Freshwater. Need to check on one of Elaine's babies. Looks like scours, but is too old for it to be classic foal heat scours. So...need to check her out. Elaine is off clinicing with George Morris...and I'm looking at a baby with the poops. Life just isn't fair sometimes. lol

blueheron said...

Oh dear, is that the baby you were taking care of a couple weeks ago? I hope he's okay. Good thing Elaine has you on watch (again) for this one.
Maybe you can put some more training on that filly, too, while you're at it. lol.

You're BREEDING Iris??

;)

horspoor said...

No, it's Sally's baby, Sitka.

No looking at breeding Iris' mother GL. lol

I have to raise my hand and point out my stud, lol.

colored cutting horses

smokes navajo

my website needs some serious work and I just got his pictures done and need to load them. I just need more hours in the day, ugh.

horspoor said...

My only concern is that Smokes Navajo is a thick as Cat. I was looking for something with a lighter build. I do think he is very pretty, I'm just not sure it's the direction I want to go. He is actually bred somewhat similiar to Cat in some ways.

GoLightly said...

Just kiddin', HP.

I luz Iris.

horspoor said...

I'll be shipping her to you shortly then GL. You two will look good. I think she might make 14.2h. lol If it gets a little 'western' you can just step off the side. But she's red...you'll be color coordinated.
